The Home Stretch…Why Hispanic Turnout May Decide the Nevada Senate Race

Nevada has a substantial Hispanic population (more than 25 percent). A significant portion of that 25 percent hold labor-oriented jobs in Nevada’s many restaurants, casinos and hotels. As a result, the Hispanic and labor vote (often overlapping) are key to winning any statewide race in Nevada, making them a heavily courted demographic. But Republican and Tea Party-endorsed candidate Sharron Angle seems to have thrown caution to the wind, focusing on tough immigration reform and lowering taxes. Such themes play well with the Republican base, but not as much to the typically left-leaning Hispanic population and labor groups in Nevada.

Money Talks, but can it Debate?

Tea Party darling and Republican nominee Sharron Angle raised a staggering $14 million for her campaign during the third quarter (July 1-September 30) of 2010. Angle’s communications director was quoted as saying, "Sharron Angle produced one of the most successful single quarters of fundraising in the nation's history for a U.S. Senate campaign." Incumbent Senator Harry Reid’s spokesperson, not surprisingly, dismissed the number as “meaningless” without factoring in how much money was spent to generate such funds.

If you can’t beat ‘em…

Just days after GOP Senate nominee Sharron Angle was caught on tape bashing the party that nominated her, Angle and another Tea Party-leaning candidate, Marco Rubio, were honored at an event held by an elite group of Republican donors as well as a number of current GOP senators at the so-called “lobbyist row” condos on K Street, National Journal and The Wall Street Journal reported. Was this an attempt to placate Angle by raising funds for her inside the Beltway and reign in her establishment-bashing? Or was the event held as a public show of solidarity among Republican incumbents and the party’s nominees? Whatever the case, GOP senators seemed willing to brush aside Angle’s previous criticisms of the party and come out in support of their nominee. Since Angle’s comment that the Republican Party had “lost its principles” was made public, the race in Nevada is shaping up to be “Harry Reid versus the Tea Party.” Reid is running against the man billing himself as the Tea Party candidate, Jon Scott Ashjian, and Angle, who is endorsed by the Tea Party. One way the GOP seems to be dealing with Angle’s recent statements is to relate it to dissatisfaction with “Washington elites” in general, versus the Republican Party in particular. Former Virginia GOP Senator George Allen was quoted as saying about Angle on his way into the fundraiser, "What Sharron Angle is saying as far as Washington elites, I hear that all across Virginia."
