“Who Would Take Our Place?”

Perhaps it was the historic location of Westminster Hall, perhaps it was the pomp and circumstance which Britain does like nowhere else in the world or perhaps it was the massive expectations we now have of Barack Obama’s rhetorical skills, but the president’s speech to both Houses of Parliament today felt a little flat. Whatever it felt like, in reality it was a serious and necessary restatement of the importance of the values and international leadership the United States and the United Kingdom share, after a difficult decade which has seen economy and war dent the confidence of both countries.
