More History in the Making…

When the dust settles on the Spitzer mess – and I hope that’s sooner than later – I remain optimistic that the country will focus on the rest of the story: David Paterson, a lawyer who hails from Harlem (and who is also legally blind), will become New York’s first African American governor. He is only the fourth African American governor in our nation’s history. As lieutenant governor, he reportedly led efforts on stem cell research, alternative energy and domestic violence. He’s also said to be cordial, a good listener and to possess a great sense of humor. He joined NY’s state senate in 1985, worked his way up to minority leader in 2002 and was elected to his current job on November 7, 2006. News reports call him easy-going and quite likely to work well with his republican colleagues in the Empire State’s legislature – far more so, apparently, than Mr. Spitzer did. Next Monday, Mr. Paterson makes history.

I wonder what Ms. Ferraro will have to say about that…

He’s now the most senior blind politician in the world.
