Extending the Spirit of Veterans Day Throughout the Year
Posted by Tara Greco
Civic Enterprises and Target released some compelling research yesterday about how volunteering and civic engagement helps veterans ease their transition back into American society, after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
When veterans return home, they are often dealing with complex issues like mental health, homelessness, unemployment, family instability, etc. Because of these challenges, the public perception is often that veterans don’t want to be connected to the community or that they have “given enough.” Yet this new research shows that 92% of returning veterans want to continue serving their country at home. In fact, the research demonstrates that community engagement can actually help veterans reconnect to their home communities and ease their transition.
In the report Civic Enterprises also presents some good ideas for how we can all continue to honor and embrace veterans throughout the year, as they return home and find new ways to serve their country.
