Margaret Thatcher’s 1979 introduction of departmental select committees to the British House of Commons was meant to give backbench MPs a more meaningful role, but anyone hoping for bodies with power and influence rivalling the congressional committees of the United States will have been disappointed.

Jonathan Powell on the 2010 UK General Election

On Tuesday, 11th May, we were fortunate to have Jonathan Powell, former chief of staff to Prime Minister Tony Blair in our London offices to speak to an invited group of Ambassadors and diplomatic officials. As the negotiations continued over who would govern Britain, Mr Powell assessed the performance of all the parties in the 2010 General Election, and what it would mean for the future.
