The Under-represented Role of Women in Business and Government

February is Black History Month in the United States. Its origin can be traced back to scholar Carter G. Woodson, who, on February 7, 1926, led the first celebration of “Negro History Week” to help rectify the omission of African-Americans from history books. Today, the observance of Black History Month provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of African-Americans and to recommit to making the teaching of history more honest and inclusive. The theme of Black History Month 2012 is “Black Women in American Culture and History.” African-American women are members of two traditionally excluded groups in the United States and have faced overwhelming odds in making their names and stories known. In spite of those barriers, the deeds of women like Harriett Tubman, Rosa Parks, Barbara Jordan and Condoleeza Rice now grace the pages of history books. There are singers and writers and poets and artists who also left their mark on American culture and who helped make this country great. But there are countless others whose stories have never been told. And, in spite of civil rights laws and affirmative acts on the part of government, employers and educational institutions to curb discrimination, African-American women continue to face obstacles on the path to the American dream.

New Decade, New Consumer

On February 10, APCO Worldwide’s San Francisco office hosted an executive roundtable on the “New Decade, New Consumer: A ‘2020’ look at how brand and reputation drives business results in a connected, global economy.” Moderated by Shelby Coffey, former editor of the Los Angeles Times and member of APCO’s International Advisory Council, the panel featured senior-level communication executives from such leading companies as University of Phoenix*, IKEA*, Redphlag, and Facebook. The event attracted more than 90 attendees from Bay Area companies, including representatives from Gap, PlayFirst, Kodak Gallery* and Greenpeace.

The Deep Blue State

I’m praying I have a shred of credibility left after my overly optimistic post Tuesday night; it was a long and painful evening. California Democrats trounced the Republicans in every statewide race, save one, and that one’s too close to call. Look at the margins, thus far, representing ballots cast yesterday:

Does Whitman have Coattails?

The sun is just a few minutes from setting in Sacramento and, in just two hours, will also set for the most expensive gubernatorial campaign in the Nation’s history. I haven’t talked to a single individual yet today who believes Meg Whitman will win her election; however, I am among those who believe the race will be far closer than the latest polls have predicted. Former Governor Jerry Brown was leading Whitman by 10 points over the weekend, according to The Field Poll – picking up support from women, Latinos and independent voters due to a late surge in LA County.

California Not So Golden for Republican Women

I was a typical California teenager hanging out at my house one Tuesday night almost two decades ago. My parents were away at a meeting, so my sister – three years my senior – and I left the house to attend a party. It wasn’t just some house party, however; it was the party celebrating the election-night victories of Anna Eshoo, Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein at Eshoo’s campaign headquarters in Palo Alto. The year was 1992: “The Year of the Woman.” It was an exciting time to be a young woman interested in politics in California.

A New Type of Attorney General for California?

One is the San Francisco district attorney; the other is the Los Angeles district attorney. Both come from a criminal law/public safety background, a marked difference from our last three attorneys general. But don’t expect that to mean that Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Steve Cooley would take the same approach to the office of California’s attorney general.
